Select your companion's species, the name list appears in alphabetical order.
A name that sounds nothing like your basic commands ("sit," "stay," "come") saves you a lot of confusion later, especially during training. Shorter names — one or two clear syllables — tend to register faster with animals than long or fussy ones, simply because they're easier to say sharply and consistently.
For dogs and cats, watch out for names that rhyme with words you'll say around them a lot ("Bo" and "no" is a classic mismatch). For birds and small rodents, names with crisp consonants often carry better than soft, breathy ones that get lost in everyday noise.
Can I rename an adult pet I've adopted?
Yes, that's completely fine. Most animals adjust to a new name within a few weeks with consistent positive reinforcement — pairing it with a treat or affection.
Are these lists tailored to a particular style?
We deliberately mix classic, gentle, and more unusual names for each species, and keep expanding the lists over time.
