Foods to avoid entirely
- Chocolate: contains theobromine, toxic to the heart and nervous system — dark chocolate is the most dangerous
- Grapes and raisins: can cause acute kidney failure, even in small amounts, through a mechanism still not fully understood
- Onion, garlic, leek, chives (Allium family): destroy red blood cells and can cause anemia, in any form (raw, cooked, powdered)
- Xylitol: a sweetener found in some gums and low-sugar products, causes a sharp drop in blood sugar and can damage the liver
- Avocado: contains persin, toxic in significant amounts, particularly to the heart
- Alcohol and raw bread dough: yeast continues fermenting in the stomach, producing alcohol and dangerous gases
- Macadamia nuts: can cause weakness, tremors, and hyperthermia
If accidental ingestion occurs
Contact your veterinarian or a veterinary poison control center immediately, even without immediate symptoms — some effects (like with grapes) can appear with a delay. Never induce vomiting without professional guidance, as it can worsen some situations.
