The most dangerous plants
- Yew (Taxus): all parts are highly toxic, including seeds inside the red berries. Can cause severe cardiac issues.
- Azalea and rhododendron: contain grayanotoxins that can cause vomiting, weakness, and in severe cases cardiac problems.
- Dieffenbachia: irritating calcium oxalate crystals, mouth burns and excessive drooling.
- Sago palm (Cycas revoluta): extremely toxic to the liver, even in small amounts — an absolute veterinary emergency.
- Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis): toxic to the heart, can cause serious arrhythmias.
- Pothos and Monstera: oral and digestive irritation from calcium oxalates.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, lethargy, tremors, or breathing difficulties depending on the plant involved. For sago palm and yew in particular, symptoms can be severe and fast-developing.
What to do if you suspect ingestion
Contact your veterinarian or a veterinary poison control center immediately, without waiting for symptoms to appear. Bring a sample of the plant if possible to help with identification.
