Profile
The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is far more than a "starter fish" โ properly cared for, it can live over 10 years and reach a surprising size (20-30 cm / 8-12 in as an adult for common varieties). The widespread "small bowl" belief is actually one of the leading causes of early death: this fish needs real water volume to develop normally.
Feeding
- Base: goldfish-specific pellets or flakes, 1-2 small feedings per day
- Supplement: occasional blanched vegetables (a mashed pea, for example)
- Avoid overfeeding โ most goldfish are overfed by their owners, which quickly degrades water quality
Care
- Minimum recommended volume: a real aquarium (at least 50-60 liters / 13-16 gallons for a single fish), never just a bowl
- Proper filtration is essential โ goldfish produce a lot of waste
- Regular partial water changes (around 20% weekly)
- Stable room temperature, no heater needed (cold-water fish)
Daily life
Contrary to popular belief, goldfish are social and even learn to recognize their owner over time. They thrive better in a group of 2-3 minimum rather than alone, in a tank spacious enough for all of them.
