Profile
Native to the Mediterranean basin, Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is a protected species in Europe โ keeping one is subject to regulation (permit or declaration depending on the country, mandatory individual marking). This is an exceptionally long commitment: a well-cared-for Hermann's tortoise can easily live past 50 years, sometimes passed down across generations.
Feeding
- Base: a varied mix of wild and cultivated greens (dandelion, clover, plantain), rich in fiber and calcium
- Avoid fruits and watery or sugary vegetables in excess (tomato, too much lettuce)
- Calcium supplementation recommended, especially for growing juveniles
Care
- Ideally lives outdoors for much of the year in a secure enclosure (Mediterranean climate or a heated outdoor terrarium depending on region)
- Hibernation: an essential part of this species' life cycle, requiring preparation and veterinary guidance, especially in the first year
- Microchipping/marking mandatory in many European countries
Daily life
A calm animal that requires little daily interaction, but needs a suitable outdoor space and a genuine understanding of its biological cycle (hibernation in particular). Not suited to a permanent indoor terrarium alone.
