Profile
Native to West Africa, the fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) gets its name from its large wavy leaves shaped like a lyre or violin, reaching 30-40 cm (12-16 in) long. A favorite in interior design for its sculptural look, it has a reputation for being fussy โ especially sensitive to sudden changes in environment.
Light & watering
- Light: bright but indirect โ direct sun scorches the leaves, while too little light slows growth significantly
- Watering: let the top 2-3 cm (1 in) of soil dry between waterings, avoiding both excess and prolonged dryness
- Appreciates good ambient humidity (occasional misting helps)
Care
- Avoid moving the plant frequently โ it often responds to environmental changes by dropping leaves
- Regular dusting of the large leaves to optimize photosynthesis
- Rich, well-draining soil
- Repot every 1-2 years in spring
Daily life
Needs a stable spot, bright but shielded from direct sun and cold drafts. Once its conditions are right, it rewards with impressive growth and striking foliage.
