Profile
Native to South Africa, Crassula ovata develops a thick, woody trunk with age, taking on the look of a miniature bonsai tree. Its fleshy, glossy green leaves can develop reddish tints under strong light.
Light & watering
- Light: full sun or very bright light โ essential for a compact shape and vivid colors
- Watering: "soak and dry" method, let it dry out completely between waterings
- Reduce watering significantly in winter (dormancy)
Care
- Like most succulents, hates standing water: favor very well-draining soil and a pot with a drainage hole
- The most reliable propagation method is a 2โ4in (5โ10cm) stem cutting, left to callus for 2โ3 days before planting โ it roots without any rooting hormone
- Can live for decades with minimal care
Growing it as a bonsai
Its thick, woody trunk, which develops naturally with age, makes it one of the few succulents commonly trained as an indoor bonsai: regular pruning of young shoots, combined with infrequent repotting into a shallow pot, further slows its already slow growth and encourages denser branching to achieve a miniature tree silhouette โ a use that most other succulents in this catalog can't offer, lacking a sufficiently structured trunk.
Daily life
Ideal for a very bright windowsill or well-lit desk. Its exceptional lifespan makes it a great plant to pass down across generations, sometimes regarded as a symbol of good luck.
