Profile
Native to West Africa, the Snake Plant has stiff, upright leaves, often variegated with yellow or silver. It tolerates extreme conditions: low light, prolonged neglect, dry air.
Light & watering
- Light: adapts from shade to full sun
- Watering: let it dry out completely between waterings (overwatering is the only real risk)
- Humidity: no special requirements
Care
- Repot rarely (every 3โ4 years, slow growth)
- No pruning needed
Growth & propagation
- Very slow growth โ a few new leaves a year is normal, not a sign of a problem
- Propagate by rhizome division to keep the variegated pattern; a leaf cutting rooted in water takes easily but often grows back solid green, without the original yellow edge
- Can occasionally bloom indoors: small, fragrant white flowers, mostly at night โ rare but normal, not a stress signal
- Soft, yellowing leaves at the base mean overwatering โ the most common mistake with this plant is watering out of habit rather than actual need
